She’s a classic; a picture-perfect embodiment of feminine glamour without even trying!There could not have been a better fit than the effervescent Chitrangda Singh to be Zee Zest’s Cover Star for March 2024, a month where we celebrate women and their stories. Actor, writer, and producer, the absolute stunner switches between being the camera lens’ muse and a friend hanging out, dropping style tips with ease. Filling the magnificent ITC Grand Central Mumbai’s Presidential suite with her captivating energy, Chitrangda effortlessly embodies all the female archetypes featured in our latest editorial.Starting her career in 2005 with Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi (2005), Chitrangda's filmography features hard hitters like Inkaar (2013), Bob Biswas (2021) and most recently, the mystery thriller Gaslight (2023). A natural progression from her modelling days, Chitrangda’s shift to acting may have had a few tell-tale signs in her early childhood. “There are home movies of me, all of two or three years old, dancing around. It was weird and funny because nobody in my family, including my mum, ever danced. My mum used to wonder where this came from? Which why she had me learn Kathak too (to hone my skills). But particularly acting, I don't think I ever thought of that, but I did think I had a dancer in me,” she reminisces.<h2>The rebel with a cause</h2><figure class="image"><img src="https://assets.zeezest.com/images/PROD_3-Chitrangda_1710308128845.jpg"><figcaption>On Chitrangda: Leather jacket and pants by Appapop, bralette and mesh top by Emblaze, Jewellery by ABHILASHA Jewelry Collection </figcaption></figure>It might only take a fabulous leather outfit to transform Chitrangda into a rebel for a photograph, but what does it take to play one on screen? Especially when such characters can become the first ones to be “cancelled” for pushing the boundaries. “I think when you're playing a part, it is what you are. You don't have to be answerable to the audience. You have a responsibility to your part and your director,” she opines. Reflecting on her roles, Chitrangda picked her character Maya (Inkaar, 2013) as the most rebellious or modern character that she’s played. The fact that Maya fought with every bit of woman in her to stand up against the man she was in love with helped her tap into the most profound strength that you can find inside you to stand up to something. Chitrangda’s mantra for unapologetically being yourself is an asset that gives her a fresh outlook on the industry she’s chosen to be a part of. When she started out in the industry, and in some ways even today, gorgeous dusky girls didn’t seem to fit into the beauty standards of Bollywood. And while she may not bless cinemagoers with frequent on-screen appearances, it is her unique outlook on the industry trends that make her an interesting outlier among actors working today. But what made her this way? Raised in an army family, Chitrangda possesses a unique perspective that’s distinct from her industry counterparts. She believes that if you're not from the industry and you've grown up in different parts of the country with diverse backgrounds, especially in the army, which is markedly different from civilian life, it gives you a different outlook. It opens you up to meeting diverse people and shapes your perspective on prioritising and valuing different things. For instance, in her family, they were conscious about waking up early or admiring good swimmers in the community! She recalls growing up, engaging in competitions like who could dive from the top of the diving board. The lifestyle is vastly different, leading her to appreciate slightly different aspects than those in a big city.The actor goes on to elaborate on what has kept her grounded in Bollywood, “I'd never lived in a big city till I did my college in Delhi. I'd never been to Bombay till I did my first film. So, for me, obviously things were different. It probably makes you rooted, value different things than just fame and success, probably of the kind that gets defined when you are in the film industry. The most popular form of power dressing, the actor oozes the 'Woman On Top’ energy in her separates. Hinting at power dressing briefs done by Chanel, Ralph Lauren and Tom Ford, she confesses to leaning towards androgynous additions and elements to the structure and style of the ensembles. “I don’t like the feminine versions of power dressing,” she reveals, admitting how much she enjoyed the particular segment for the cover shoot. Not just in wardrobe but Chitrangda has showcased exercising power in her work too. Talking about a particular instance that serendipitously ended up her taking up a writing gig for herself, she reveals, “The first time I ever wrote was for Inkaar and Sudhir Mishra, my director. I had many suggestions for a particular scene, so he said why don’t you just write it? I was just very happy that he kept it. And first time seeing what I wrote on paper translated on screen was exciting and it just kind of got me to want to write more” she reveals. Deep diving into her characters who’ve had to also be authentic and turn it up to a 10 on the emotional scale, Chitrangda confesses to borrowing a lot from her personal life to hone her craft. “I think personal experiences are huge fodder to the kind of stuff that I've done. Maybe I am a little intense kind of a person, emotionally. So, for me to draw that out is probably easier and understanding such women is slightly easier too. As actors, we also bring a lot of ‘us’ on set. And I'm very glad to have played these characters because I don't think such characters are written that often for women,” she says while talking about female characters who are so invested to their emotional responses to things without judgement, are neither purely good nor entirely evil; just a hint of grey to maintain authenticity of the human condition. <h2>The feminine energy that nurtures and empowers</h2><figure class="image"><img src="https://assets.zeezest.com/images/PROD_4-Chitrangda_1710308206600.jpg"><figcaption>On Chitrangda: Sheer organza saree by Kapardara, mangtika by Razwada Jewels via Rizwan Shaikh  </figcaption></figure>A female archetype that’s evolved the most in recent years is the matriarch of the family. The ‘Indian Bahu’, who makes a family and keeps it together. Talking about the representation of the same in the media, Chitrangda says, “It's changed enormously. Now, she has a voice. She's not demure or some voiceless being that’s servile and does what “the man” wants. And I think these are the traits that are now being admired. But at the same time, since it's a very traditional society, I feel like we, we like that traditionalism sometimes. And I feel being a strong woman doesn't mean you need to win all the time, you know? It's not about being right all the time, but about being visible. So, I think that kind of balance is where we're reaching, which is great.”Decked out in a white saree and come to slay, Chitraganda is beauty personified. Picking her brain, I extracted some tips for the beauty lovers lurking in this story. Talking about her skincare approach, she states (quite controversially!) that she doesn't believe in facials or similar treatments unless opting for occasional clean-ups. According to her, the key to skin wellness is staying consistent with your daily routine. Keeping the skin clear, ample water intake, and regular workouts are crucial, as they can bring about transformative changes. Having experienced the benefits, she incorporates vegetable juices into her morning routine. She also started consuming ghee, considering it a beneficial fat. She confessed that for her, the morning regimen within the initial two hours of waking up significantly impacts her skin. “It’s about what you put in your body rather than what you’re putting on your skin,” she concludes.<h2>Putting the ‘C’ in ‘Classic’</h2><figure class="image"><img src="https://assets.zeezest.com/images/PROD_2-Chitrangda_1710308234617.jpg"><figcaption>On Chitrangda: Black Bow Gown by Khushbu Rathod Label via Ascend Communication </figcaption></figure>By her own admission, she doesn’t quite follow trends, but in fact prefers everything classic when it comes to dressing up. “I think it's a lot of who I am,” she says, and her reputation of consistently serving timeless style surely precedes her and is an extension of her personality. It’s about being authentic to oneself, she says as she tries not to get influenced by trends, unless a particular theme asks for it. “Be yourself and then own it,” she adds while taking a pause to say goodbye to her styling team. “I think it's just who I am very distinctly. I love experimenting with looks because I feel like that kind of transforms me into a character, quite similar to what we’re doing today. The reason I got so excited with the mood board was because it’s like playing four different people or characters. As an actor that's what I enjoy in a photo shoot,” she confesses. With each look being shot, I found myself mouthing under my breath, “She’s so Mother”! As a member of the ‘girls and the gays’ club, Chitrangda is one of those women who exudes confidence that we’d like to emulate in our private lives. When coaxed, she quite rightfully discouraged the notion of finding role models in glamorous portrayals. She pointed out that there's much more complexity involved in such roles, and the individuals playing those parts may not reflect real-life personas. She encourages seeking inspiration from individuals you come across in everyday life and who exhibit real strength and resilience. So, what inspires her? “Real life stories, people experiences, and characters made from what they've lived is what interests me, and I think that is beautiful. The glamour we see online is endless, every single reel is gorgeous. It's unbelievable the amount of beauty on Instagram right now that I'm frankly immune to it now. It's hot, yet but what else? To truly find and be inspired by beauty we should go beyond that. Look inwards and look around you. There are only certain things that will make film and entertainment journalists okay with working on a Sunday, and Gulshan Devaiah playing with bubbles while the cameras aren't rolling is one of them! Our first cover star of 2024 seamlessly switches between outfit changes, understanding the theme of the shoot, and keeping the crew engaged. Much in line with the theme at hand – freedom of expression and all the forms it can take for an individual. He also managed to squeeze in an insightful interview on what freedom of expression means to him, and the revelations were exemplary.Whether he's tackling complex characters or navigating the maze of social media, Gulshan is not just an actor; he's a storyteller with a side of wit and a dash of irreverence. An impactful debut in That Girl in Yellow Boots (2010) followed by Shaitan and Dum Maaro Dum (2011) showcased his diverse acting prowess early on. Hunterr (2015) is now considered a modern cult classic, and a supporting role in Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela (2013) cemented his reputation as a force to be reckoned with. Proving that he has a funny bone as well, the incredibly quirky Mard Ko Dard Nahi Hota (2018) and the dark comedy series Afsos (2020) are also part of his impressive repertoire. Gulshan's collaborations with acclaimed directors such as Anurag Kashyap and Sriram Raghavan underline the richness of his filmography. Most recently, his layered portrayals in Dahaad and Guns & Gulaabs showcase his range, playing men who can be morally ambiguous to downright evil. For someone like Gulshan, the sense of feeling the freedom of expressing then becomes crucial for his roles. Bringing out the theme to life as well, here's how Gulshan practices his freedom of expression in a modern world that is quick to judge.<figure class="image"><img src="https://assets.zeezest.com/images/PROD_2D-1397_zeezest_atu_kasbekar_retouch_Bubbles_RGB_1706187984600.jpg"><figcaption>On Gulshan: Shirt by NAUTANKY, bracelet by Ishhaara, jeans by Love Space, shoes by London Rag </figcaption></figure><h2>On growing up and growing out</h2>Just how liberating can art be? Especially for children growing up in conservative environments where their behaviour is constantly dictated. “While growing up, I think, kids were discouraged to express themselves and expected to behave a certain way. Especially with male children, you cannot weep or express grief or sadness. You are made fun of by other children or sometimes even by elders. It is usually associated with being feminine, if you cry. I wasn't introduced to concepts of self-expression while growing up. It was a very conservative environment,” reveals Gulshan while reminiscing about his own experiences of not being encouraged to express himself and live his truths.  “Cinema is what introduced me to new ideas and new concepts,” confesses Gulshan. “As an actor when I was on stage or in front of the camera, I could express myself freely and nobody was telling me you can't do this. The requirement of an actor is to express and that’s why I was drawn to the craft of acting and was free to interpret text.”He elaborates, “As I grew, I started to incorporate those things in my life also and I absolutely do not feel ashamed when I feel sad or pain or when I cry. In fact, I cry a lot!” exclaims Gulshan. “When I feel hurt, when you lose a family member, relationship falls apart or anything like that, or other kinds of disappointments, I really cry my eyes out.”  Another actor who’s made Gulshan bawl? But these days social censorship has taken over where certain groups of people take offense and have extreme reactions to things. “Which is why the Censor Board is not particularly in the news lately,” chuckles Gulshan. They can often miss certain contexts or there are perspectives that can be skewed. “Maybe sometimes they start to cut things because they can. I don't know. But I do believe that there must be some kind of an organisation and a Censor Board is necessary as it maintains the balance of freedom of expression and responsibility,” concludes Gulshan.  So, does social censorship cause Gulshan any grief? “When the people take offence and go after certain films or certain actors, sometimes they scare you. Will I be free to tackle certain stories? It creates fear, and that's probably the intention behind it as well,” he notes.  How can then storytellers tread the line of what’s offensive and what’s required for the story? He explains, “It's all about sincerity. How sincere are you in the way you're telling the story? Because insincerity can get you into trouble. With controversial subjects also, if you're sincere in your portrayal, most audiences will see it for what it is.” He goes to point to one of his roles that on the surface should be “cancelled”, but wasn’t. “There are certain protagonists who can be terribly entertaining but are despicable people. But that must come across. Take Atmaram from Guns & Gulaabs. People love Atmaram, because he’s entertaining. But you don't want to know an Atmaram in real life because he's not a nice person at all. Absolutely not. He's a murderer. He's a psychopath. He kills people for money,” Gulshan confesses. But the reason why Gulshan didn't hold back, and it worked is because the whole thing is a fantasy. “And the thing with fantasies is that the audience is in on it. That world may give you an illusion of reality but it's not. They’re exaggerated ideas, which can often make films such an enjoyable experience!” explains Gulshan.<figure class="image"><img src="https://assets.zeezest.com/images/PROD_G-1397_zeezest-atul-kasbekar-retouch_pride_1706188345559.jpg"><figcaption>On Gulshan: Vest by Zara, choker by Golden Window jewellery , bracelet by SIMRANCHHABRA JEWELS, rings by Ishhaara, dhoti: stylist’s own</figcaption></figure><h2>On the fluid nature of freedom of expression</h2>“I used to be made fun of by people when I was a young boy and especially in my teens because some of my mannerisms were feminine. Once I began to accept those aspects of me as being natural, I began to not pretend to be someone else, I began to accept my true authentic self. I am a man who is comfortable and in touch with my feminine side as much as my masculine side,” confesses Gulshan.As an artist, and one that works with some of the most influential storytellers, Gulshan shared some interesting insights into the idea of freedom of expression. “I don't think that freedom of expression is absolute. We must exercise some social responsibility,” he stressed on the point that freedoms are important. But in society, freedom also comes with a caveat; there should be a counterbalance of responsibility. “Just because I have freedom of expression, I cannot put you down. I cannot swear at you, demean you or humiliate you. That’s when I am being irresponsible with my freedoms," Gulshan states. <h2>On approaching risqué roles</h2>Gulshan is no stranger to characters written to be outrageous, with an insatiable hunger to create chaos. So how does he approach a role like such? He reveals, “Often the dilemma for actors is that the scripts that you read or the characters that you play are people that you don't really like or agree with. I have a very simple rule of thumb when it comes to deciding whether I want to play these characters or be part of these scripts. It must be genuinely interesting to me, and if Gulshan is not able to accept the reality of the character the way it is then I can't do it.”Giving us an insight into what can make even him squirm, Gulshan revealed that gratuitous violence against women in cinema is a big no-no because as a person he cannot relate to the reality of the same. “It might be ideological or personal, but this is my technique. There are actors who believe that these are characters and your personal opinion about this doesn’t matter. It's a fair point but it does matter to me.”Gulshan also stressed on the importance of a collaborative relationship with filmmakers to take on challenging or controversial roles. “I've managed to negotiate necessary changes in my projects. And from Reema Kagti and Harshavardhan Kulkarni to Vasan Bala, I’ve worked with storytellers who are quite responsible themselves,” he reveals. Touching upon his most controversial role till date, he says, “Hunterr looks at sexuality and puberty with a male perspective. At least that's what it seems on the face of things. The film is a lot more actually than what people get excited about. It's a coming-of-age character study. And because it has it had a very sincere approach, and this is what the director wanted. We didn't think that we were making a film that's misogynist. But having said that, it would be a little bit difficult to make such a film now.”He concludes by saying, “One shouldn't be really scared about what people will think; being responsible is good, being afraid is not. I'm fortunate that all the people that I have worked with worked with have been responsible, or at least have allowed me to reason with them and then make the necessary changes.”<figure class="image"><img src="https://assets.zeezest.com/images/PROD_A-1397_CD_ATUL-KASBEKAR_Zee_Gulshan_MATRIX_Crop_RGB_1706188534520.jpg"><figcaption>On Gulshan: Hoodie and leather pants by Natty Garb, rings by Ishhaara</figcaption></figure><h2>On digital media and how to tackle the monster</h2>Digital media spaces, especially social media, can be vicious for someone living their life in the limelight. Confessing to feeling his own freedom of expression violated, Gulshan reveals, “I feel that we haven't really found a healthy way of using social media. Even if I am being very respectful with my opinion about anything, people who don't like it take it in an extreme manner. Perhaps they themselves don't believe in this extremism, but it just ends up being quite an extreme reaction to things.”So how does Gulshan deal with it? “Initially, I had no idea how to use social media. My way of looking at it is as an extension of myself. If I'm sitting with you here and I'm talking to you here, I should be the same on social media. Apart from that, because of my profession, it's another medium that I use to market either myself or my projects,” explains Gulshan.  So, is it always just business? For Gulshan, no. “When I'm expressing myself and sharing opinions, I must have reasonable degree of responsibility attached to it. Many times, I'm typing something, and I delete it. I don't post them at all because I feel like why am I doing this? Sometimes I post wrong things also; you can't always get it right, and that's how you learn.”So, what has Gulshan learned from playing the Insta-game for so long? Share your opinions online but do it responsibly. It’s about anonymity. The fact that you do not see the people behind the dislikes or mean comments does not mean you can say anything to them. “A lot of times people do behave irresponsibly on social media and get a lot of traction, but that’s insincere and you're not being authentic. You're just doing things because you know something will be controversial and get retweeted or go viral with people having extreme reactions to it. I also see people I know, and love do that as well, and it bothers me, and I try to reason with them, but it rarely works, "exasperates Gulshan.<figure class="image"><img src="https://assets.zeezest.com/images/PROD_F-1397_zeezest_atul_kasbekar_retouch_MEDIA_F1_RGB_1706188577013.jpg"><figcaption>On Gulshan: Tuxedo by NM DESIGN STUDIO, bowtie by The Tie Hub</figcaption></figure><h2>On self-censorship and why it’s important</h2>“Self-censorship should be driven by a sense of responsibility towards society, not by fear," clarifies Gulshan, elaborating, “It’s good practice and I think each one of us should be responsible with their words and at the same time you're also exercising your freedom of expression. I remember having an issue with some of the dialogue or certain phrases. But I was fortunate that the people I was working with saw the point and allowed me to make changes. Sometimes even the writers allowed me to make the change and some of them even suggested alternatives.”Empathising with his colleagues, he reveals that more than actors, storytellers face precautionary censorship from producers, networks or studios. “But if it's driven by fear, then that's not right. And a lot of self-censorship is driven by fear— Fear of having something shut down, taken down, or backlash,” he confesses. And what exactly is making storytellers today afraid? “Money, right to do business and how it affects your business all. It's fear, it's not good and shouldn’t exist,” opines Gulshan.<h2>Is there anything off limits for Gulshan?</h2>For an actor with Gulshan’s range, is there anything he wouldn't do? “Nothing is off limits. It’s the perspective. Why are you saying something? What is the point of it? Are you trying to make people think or are you trying to entertain people. It's all about how sincere and honest you are exploring a subject. Your protagonist may be a very dodgy person. But if you're sincere in your approach, then that becomes a character study.”But something that will have Gulshan leaving you on read? Insincerity. “Quite often people use their freedom of expression in order to titillate and that lacks sincerity,” he reveals. Item songs with women in skimpy clothes to get YouTube hits? Gulshan’s not on board. It is empowering to see the Fourth Estate take down those who are corrupt-minded and full of criminal intent, at least on our screens. There are many international shows such as Aaron Sorkin’s The Newsroom and Reporter, starring Shekhar Suman, in the glory days of Doordarshan that have previously set a successful precedent for the genre to grow.Shriya informs that The Broken News season one was an adaptation of a 2018 BBC show called Press. The show’s success was such that there is a season 2 in the pipeline. “The BBC original didn’t have a season 2, but we just finished shooting for the second season,” she adds to the conversation about the depiction of journalism and media on screens. One of the biggest reasons for commissioning season 2, she believes, is the skillful adaptation in the Indian context. “The Broken News reflects the situation in Indian newsrooms and media houses, and more importantly how things are not always black and white. While Jaideep (Ahlawat) and Sonali’s (Bendre) characters were different ends of the spectrum, my character, Radha Bhargava, in contrast was a very layered one,” she says.The genre has depth, interest, and impact that allows resonance. “We got really good feedback from a lot of journalists and reporters,” she exclaims about the upcoming season. “Season two is full of crazy twists and turns. The jewellery is from Misho and Timeless Jewels by Shweta.</figcaption></figure>A lot of this positive feedback has to do with OTT as a platform that allows actors to pick up subjects and stories that have roots in reality and are conversation starters. “I don't think the point is to teach life lessons,” Shriya says. She gives the example of her courtroom drama Guilty Minds, which she thinks is different from other courtroom dramas in India. “Guilty Minds conveyed an authenticity to the legal system in India. If you have makers who want to be authentic and want to present stories in an engaging, intriguing, and entertaining way—it will be appreciated and successful,” she says.<h2>Shriya’s recent success</h2>Speaking of successful shows, Shriya's success as Kashaf Quaze in Guilty Minds has to be addressed. She acknowledges that it was a dream character to portray in her career. “It's so interesting when writers don't look at you in a one-dimensional way, a limitation that is often faced when women characters are being crafted for the screen. But Guilty Minds allowed me to understand myself better as an actor and to explore myself purely because of how beautifully complex Kashaf was. She was strong and vulnerable at the same time. For me, building that character was a very beautiful experience,” Shriya reveals.As for success, she says that it is more rewarding that success finds its way through word-of-mouth because it is a much more real reception based on how much people have liked and chosen to recommend it. This sort of recognition takes time to build and get people's attention.This is how Shriya wants her audiences to perceive her and is her vision of being a professional in the cut-throat business of entertainment. “I have always been very clear about one thing, I don't look at my journey as a five-year, 10-year or even 15-year career,” she says. “I am in it for the long haul and have a vision for a 50- or 60-year-long career. While short-term setbacks can get to me, I am always looking at the larger picture. My professional decisions are not taken based on fear,” states Shriya, explaining how she wants her audiences to perceive her and sharing her vision of being a professional in the cut-throat business of entertainment.“It's very important for me to maintain that balance of doing different mediums. I'm very conscious of it as an actor and my approach is not about how much work I'm doing—but the impact of the work,” she adds. Part of Titan’s new workwear collection, the white watch with a studded bezel on Shriya’s wrist is an expression of pure elegance.</figcaption></figure>While Kashaf Quaze gave Shriya a lot of satisfaction as an actor, she is on to manifesting her next dream role. “One of my dreams is to be part of a period drama or an epic historical feature,” she confesses.<h2>A long journey</h2>There is a hint of dissatisfaction in her voice when she says, “There's a tendency for people to immediately box you into stereotypes and notions. I'm often introduced as an OTT star, but I don't imagine myself being an artist in one medium. Films, web series, and theatre all are different mediums that I want to explore as an actor. These preconceived notions can be annoying. As an actor, I don't want to allow people a chance to stereotype me or put me in a box me in any way.”Having said that she also acknowledges that there are many things an actor can't control. “You can work very hard but cannot control what opportunity finds you and what project works out. The only thing I have in my control is the ability to focus on my craft and diversify myself,” Shriya explains her method of mitigating the uncertainties of the profession. She adds, “There are times you have to spoon-feed people about your skills and capabilities because they lack the imagination.” She is referring to a big music video that is slated to launch soon, which will feature her in an avatar that no one has seen before. She also touched upon her character in Taaza Khabar, iterating that it was also not a conventional character—she played Madhu, a sex worker and love interest to Bhuvan Bam’s Vasant Gawde in the compelling series.“If you speak to any actor who's done some successful roles, they'll tell you that they will get a lot of similar kinds of characters to play,” Shriya explains. After Mirzapur, she was getting offers to play characters reminiscent of Sweety Gupta from the show. “I love surprising people with the work I'm doing. What would be very interesting for me is to do something completely unexpected, and sometimes getting that is difficult,” she continues on the importance of perseverance and upfront communication.It is this communication that led her to star in music producer OAFF’s music video Dokhi Na, shot in two days in Kolkata. “It was a chaotic shoot. I have not spent too much time in Kolkata, those two days were also my way of exploring the city. It was a completely guerrilla-style shoot with no plan and all DIY,” Shriya beams about her experience.<h2>Regional films</h2><figure class="image"><img src="https://assets.zeezest.com/images/PROD_1600%20x%20900_07_1698322729967.jpg"></figure>Though Shriya has inherent access to Marathi films, she is currently not working on any. She quickly clarifies, “People misunderstand that I'm not keen to do Marathi films, but that's not true at all.” According to Shriya, it boils down to the fact that the scripts that have come her way have not excited her yet. But there are storytellers on her wish list such as Avinash Aaron and Chaitanya Tamhane.She has worked in Tamil and Telugu films such as the trilingual Kaadan (Haathi Mere Saathi in Hindi). “I've been vocal about the fact that language is not a barrier and I want to work across industries and even globally.”<h2>Family wisdom</h2>For an actor, the trials and tribulations of a box office or critical success can make or break their career. Shriya’s approach is inordinately mature. We suspect it has to do with having prolific industry veterans and stupendous actors as parents—Shriya was born to Sachin and Supriya Pilgaonkar, both of whom are great artists. “It's an absolute privilege to have had this sort of grounding and perspective to my work,” she accepts. Sachin Pilgaonkar, Shriya’s father has been in this industry for almost 60 years with more than 200 films under his belt; he started his film career at the age of five. Her mother Supriya also has an exceptional body of work in Hindi and Marathi films, television and theatre as an actor. “The whole idea is to enjoy the journey of the creation but to detach yourself from the result,” Shriya says, suggesting this is the single biggest professional learning from her parents. “It is a hard ask but it is the only way to go because, otherwise, you will be lost,” she adds.Shriya considers emotional intelligence a fundamental requirement of being an actor because empathy is where characters are built and developed from. “It is something I have learned by observing my parents. They did not overprotect me and allowed me to take that leap of faith, fall, and learn from my mistakes,” she says. The Pilgaonkar legacy in the film fraternity is built on hard work, dedication and love, she adds.At the same time, Shriya is glad that the environment and competition within the film and entertainment industry have evolved with so many different opportunities, scopes and mediums of work that ‘insecurities’ have become redundant. She also firmly believes in supporting peers. “When I see a good performance, I reach out to the person because I think it's always nice. It's always inspiring.”<figure class="image"><img src="https://assets.zeezest.com/images/PROD_1600%20x%20900_03_1698322800746.jpg"></figure><h2>Soul searching with travel</h2>A glance at Shriya’s Instagram profile will reveal that she was bitten by wanderlust a very long time ago. “Travelling is food for my soul! It helps me nourish myself as an actor,” she says. Her favourite travel companion though is an unlikely choice for most millennials—her grandfather.“My grandfather and I have a very special travel bond and connection. He's always loved to travel and it was his dream to visit 100 countries and recently he managed to achieve it. He's travelled to 102 countries now and I have had the fortune of travelling with him and taking him also.” The most memorable for her would be the time Shriya and her grandfather went on a trip to Iceland together. “He and I have travelled around India together. Rajasthan was the first place we went to together. Her first solo trip was to Japan, she recalls. “I planned the trip from the little money I earned from my first few projects, I spent it all on this Japan trip. I was living in hostels and exploring the country on my own. It was so freeing and beautiful, and I came back with fresh zeal for life and new energy for my work,” she says.This segues into Shriya’s diary writing habits. “I have lots of diaries wherein I write my travel stories and travel experiences. Sometimes I get a lot of cool ideas for films and short stories when I'm travelling.” She does hint that she may be thinking of bringing some of these ideas to fruition but time will tell.While Shriya is looking forward to the upcoming season of The Broken News and Guilty Minds she is also excited about some big projects in the coming year. The show and Karishma’s work as Jagruti Pathak has been appreciated by audiences and critics alike. This role has been a far cry for the actor who is often remembered as a reality TV star. In the Hansal Mehta directorial, you watch the actor seamlessly transition from a relentless hawk hunting for crime stories to becoming a captivating crime story herself. She followed that stint up with series like Kkoi Dil Mein Hai, Pyaar Ke Do Naam: Ek Raadha, Ek Shyaam; Naagin, Qayaamat Ki Raat, and Baal Veer. Cut to today, she's been lighting up our screens for two whole decades! “Because of my TV background, the kind of experience I’ve got, it helps in enhancing my acting,” she candidly admits. But she hit the limelight, stealing hearts and grabbing headlines, with her appearance on some of India's most-watched reality shows. Her elegance and never-say-die spirit made her an instant favourite among viewers. It was here, on the reality stage, that she learned several other facets of entertainment."People generally think reality TV is hunky-dory and very fancy; but there is much hard work behind every show. You get physically and mentally tired. So, I think, while it is fun, there is a lot to learn. You've seen me on almost every reality show, and I have enjoyed doing those," says Karishma, shedding light on the rigorous journey that goes behind all the glitz and glam that we see on-screen.Karishma's reality TV journey spans across some of India’s leading and popular shows. From Fear Factor India and Bigg Boss 8 (where she bagged the first runner-up spot) to the dance floor of Nach Baliye 7 and the glitzy stage of Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa 9—she's done it all. Let's not forget her culinary skills on Rasoi Ki Jung Mummyon Ke Sung and her showdown in Kitchen Champion 5. Oh, and she even emerged as the winner in Fear Factor: Khatron Ke Khiladi 10! Now that's one heck of a reality TV resume!One must never forget one's roots and Karishma accepts the same with all humility. “TV is always going to be close to my heart since I started my career with it, with Balaji [Telefilms]. Her striking looks and acting chops caught the eye of directors, and she made her mark with a few notable Bollywood cameos including Unnati in Grand Masti, Pinky in Sanju, and Basanti in Suraj Pe Mangal Bhari. She was also seen portraying supporting roles in movies such as Dosti: Friends Forever, Gollu Aur Pappu, and Lahore Confidential. Her brief stint in Bollywood has showcased her ability to hold her ground in the glamorous world of Indian cinema. Karishma mentions that she has enjoyed each phase of her career (and plans to do so in the future too) because stepping out of her comfort zone and taking on new roles helps her grow as an artiste. <h2>Digital dominance</h2><figure class="image"><img src="https://assets.zeezest.com/images/PROD_004_1695930321857.jpg"></figure>Karishma Tanna's true playground, however, turned out to be the world of OTT platforms. “OTT platforms have created so much space for actors like us, who want to shine and showcase our talents. There is a sense of satisfaction in OTT,” she tells us.  With the rise of web series, she found her niche and soared to newer heights. She debuted in the digital space with Karrle Tu Bhi Mohabbat, an ALT Balaji production, and then also played pivotal roles in MX Player’s Bullets and Amazon Prime Video’s Guilty Minds and Hush Hush. On her latest show, Scoop, which was produced by Netflix, she took on the lead role as a crime reporter and received widespread acclaim. Many called it her career-best performance. Scoop is an adaptation of former crime reporter Jigna Vora’s book, Behind Bars in Byculla: My Days in Prison. Critics praised her nuanced performance as a strong but layered protagonist, affirming that she's more than just a pretty face—she's a talented actor with the guts to take on challenging roles. The show and Karishma have also been nominated for the Asia Contents Awards & Global OTT Awards 2023.During our candid chat, Karishma reveals that she relates to Jigna Vora a lot. “I believe she was extremely passionate about her work. She wanted to showcase that she stands out from the crowd, and I am the same. I wanted to prove myself as an actor,” she says. She believes that the people in showbiz have known her for a long time now, but not so much as an actor. It was director Hansal Mehta who gave her that opportunity.Ask Karishma if life and fame has changed her post the success of Scoop, and you’ll see in her responses how her humility sustains. “Karishma Tanna as an actor has been the same, and so has my process. As an actor, we feel good about getting the audience's appreciation. But I come from a simple family, so stardom doesn’t go to my head. Her love for travel is evident on her social media feeds, where she journals her adventures around the world. From picturesque beaches to bustling cities, she's seen and experienced it all; so far, Europe has been her favourite destination. “I love the vibe there. It's scenic, I relate to it a lot, and love the cafes there. We [she and her husband] did a 25-day trip to Europe and covered destinations such as Saint-Tropez and Puerto Banús.” She does confess that it is her husband, real estate businessman Varun Bangera, who is in charge of their vacation planning.<h2>Alpha woman</h2><figure class="image"><img src="https://assets.zeezest.com/images/PROD_002_1695930375433.jpg"></figure>Karishma proudly wears the label of an alpha woman. She embodies confidence, independence, and fearlessness in everything she does. Whether it's her career choices, her travels, or her outlook on life—she leads with unwavering determination and grace. A tomboy-turned-diva, Karishma—since early childhood—was determined that she wanted to achieve big things, and show people what a woman is capable of. Her focus was to create a better life for her parents and so she did. It wasn’t easy in the beginning and she struggled in the initial years of her career, but the actor feels that her hard work is finally paying off.<figure class="image"><img src="https://assets.zeezest.com/images/PROD_009_1695930393119.jpg"></figure>“The alpha woman comes from that. [Growing up] I felt that I have to take on my family’s and my responsibility. I felt that maybe God has given me an opportunity to take care of them. Karishma Tanna: Redefining Glamour, Glory and Guts

I see him at the Zee Zest Digital Cover shoot for June 2023 and he strikes a perfect 10. The piercing gaze on camera and the humility off it, the unmistakable honesty and mischievous child-like laughter; he slips in and out of moods and moments with practised ease. The man in front of the camera is a content creator, singer, songwriter, Indian classical musician, and actor Bhuvan Bam. He is the first Indian YouTube content creator to reach 10 million subscribers in 2018 for his channel BB Ki Vines, featuring comedic skits, sketches and parodies based on the everyday life of a middle-class Indian boy. Today, the channel has over 26 million subscribers, and over the years has broken countless conventional creative boundaries.  Bhuvan's soared to fame when one of his early satirical videos caught public attention in 2015 and went viral in Pakistan. It was based on a reporter’s merciless coverage of the 2014 Kashmir floods. The popularity of one single video was Bhuvan's cue to take content creation seriously and set up BB Ki Vines. The sketches are based on everyday situations that many have encountered or heard of within the six degrees of separation portrayed in an exaggerated and funny manner. Bhuvan morphs into desi characters such as Titu Mama, Sameer Fuddi, Mr Hola, and Babloo Ji that have become a mainstay of the BB Ki Vines universe. Bhuvan’s approach to situational comedy resonates with the common man because of its obviousness. He also has an eye for humour and he finds it in the most unexpected of places, people, and situations. Most importantly, since the inception of BB Ki Vines in 2015 to 2023, Bhuvan single-handedly manages all aspects of the production of his YouTube channel– scripting, acting, shooting, editing, etc. The shakey, hand-held selfie angles and perspective of the videos have added to the charm of the videos and furthered loyalties toward him. <figure class="image"><img src="https://assets.zeezest.com/images/PROD_KC_ZeexBhuvan%20May%202023%20246_1685425104900.jpg"><figcaption>Bhuvan unleashes his inner child in a blue and white crochet sweater and pants set by Péro. Over the years, he has earned opportunities to showcase his acting chops on OTT. In 2021, he became the first Indian creator to release a web show. Titled Dhindora, the show was an extension of the BB Ki Vines universe and was named 2021’s second-most watches series, according to IMDB. Dhindora was YouTube India's most-watched show that year with over 400 million views (and counting). Other projects of Bhuvan include Taaza Khabar, Rafta Rafta, and Plus Minus. He’s also made a name as a songwriter, singer, and composer through melodious tracks created for his own YouTube channel, movies, and web series like Safar, Ajnabee, Sang Hoon Tere, and Ban Gayi Zindagi. Soon, we may even watch him lead an action thriller, more details awaited.  In real life and off the camera, he is an antithesis of his characters, shy, reserved and composed. “I miss being a child, it was a carefree era,” Bhuvan tells me as he brings out his playful inner child posing in front of the camera at Zee Zest’s June 2023 digital cover shoot. But the moment the camera stops flashing, you witness a different Bhuvan. One who's “simple and boring”. In our conversation after the photo shoot, Bhuvan gets real about the constant conflict between self-belief and self-confidence, and the resultant chaos. Talk about being relatable! Edited excerpts:  <h2>1. What is Bhuvan Bam manifesting right now?</h2>Mera track record kharab hai, manifestation ke case mein (I have a bad track record in the case of manifestations). Manifestation is a buzzword right now, but it doesn’t work for me. Whatever I wish to manifest, I don’t get it. In fact, the opposite happens. Therefore, now I don’t try to manifest but I work towards it in the hope of fulfillment.<h2>2. BB Ki Vines completes eight years. How do you feel? </h2>I didn’t even realise that. I still feel so fresh and equally excited. I have been very lucky to have people around me who have constantly supported me through thick and thin. Most of the credit goes to my subscribers. I have been so unfair to them by creating just one or two videos a year. I feel so guilty about not creating more content. But they still show so much love towards me and my work, and that is what adds fuel to the fire within me. That is what makes me want to strive hard and do more work.I feel that no matter what your profession, if you have that drive, excitement and a little nervousness in creating/doing something, then you are heading in the right direction. How have you evolved as an artiste from your content creator days to now?</h2>Over the years, I have learned to be more patient, simple and satisfied. Earlier, when I was new to YouTube, there was surely greed for followers. In that desperation for eyeballs, I’d do and say things that I knew would get views for my video and create a certain impact on my audience. But today, I think before I speak. I am much calmer and more composed.One thing I feel fortunate about is that my friend circle hasn’t changed with time. I still have the same five friends I had back when I started out, and they act like mirror and shadows. Also, I share a good bond with people who I have come across via work.<h2>4. Story or characters, what is the most important thing for you?</h2>For me, the story is primary and important, and the main reason I take up a project. One thing I understand clearly is that when a person goes to watch a show or a film, he or she is going to watch it for the story. The character is secondary. You are used to switching characters but how easy or difficult is it to switch between genres?</h2>It is difficult. Take the example of Taaza Khabar, where I played a grey character. Once that shoot was over, a week later, I started shooting for Rafta Rafta, which is a romantic comedy. For the first two days, I couldn’t understand what was happening, I had withdrawal symptoms.I think switching between genres is tough for me right now because I am new to it, but I will learn with time. I have switched characters in minutes, I did that for Dhindhora too, but that’s easier for me since I have been doing so for a while. <h2>6. Why is it important for you to tell stories that are closer to reality and relatable?</h2>I feel that rooted stories have a universal appeal. I can relate to a story/scene better if I or someone I know has experienced it. Also, we (Indians) are so fortunate, we have stories in abundance. Every bylane, and every street corner [in India] is alive with stories.  Relatable content has longevity, and its mass appeal is unmatchable. Today, even the superhero universe features relatable stories. For me, Minnal Murali is a winner because although it is a superhero film, the setting is so rooted. It gives us aspiration and hope; it tells us that people like you and I can do great things. I think what is also important is to give hope to your audience through your story.<h2>7. Where do you stand in the long-format vs short-format debate?</h2>I am more inclined towards longer formats courtesy of the exposure I got to world cinema during the lockdown. Earlier my watchlist was limited to Hollywood movies, but during the lockdown, I watched a lot of foreign language films (I still do). I learned that the world has just seven stories, and we’re basing everything on those seven only. But the storytelling is different, they base it on their culture and traditions. That’s when I realised the importance of long-format content. I realised that if I wanted the audience to stay hooked to me, my characters and my work, then I needed to give them long-format content in addition to the snackable content that I create. That’s how Dhindora happened. When Dhindora was well-received, I knew that this is what I want to do without limiting myself to a particular genre. My long-term goal is to create series that are memorable and stay with the audience even after they are finished. <figure class="image"><img src="https://assets.zeezest.com/images/PROD_KC_ZeexBhuvan%20May%202023%20325_1685425438566.jpg"></figure><h2>8. While you focus on creating long-format content, will BB Ki Vines take a backseat?</h2>No, it won’t. I cannot let that go because that content and those followers are the ones who have made me who I am today, I can’t let that go in vain. I may not stay active on the channel but I will try to stay and give what they are expecting. It is my responsibility.Also, long-format content takes time to create – from ideation to execution and release.<h2>9. What are your aspirations as an actor?</h2>I don’t know if I will ever get to work with Manoj [Bajpayee] sir, but at least once I want to sit somewhere around him and just observe him and hear him talk.I recently got to do that with Nawaz bhaiya [Nawazzudin Siddiqui]. These artists have such a great body of work and yet they are so underrated. Their best quality is that stardom has not gone to their heads, they focus on doing good work regardless. With every project, they showcase a new skill that the audience has not seen before and that is amazing.<h2>10. How important is it to be surrounded by the right set of people? </h2>The fact of life is that at the end of the day you are alone. But what I have learned is that to progress in life, you need the right set of people around you, who will guide you and push you to do better, do right. Finding such people is difficult and I have been fortunate to have found a peer group like that.<h2>11. You said in an interview that success concerns you. Can you tell us why?</h2>Yes, I said that because in my head I know I still have a long way to go. We just spoke about completing eight years, but in my heart, I know there is so much more to do. I aspire to create more and more stories from the grassroots level but at the same time make them reach international stages. How do you keep yourself centred in the fast-paced world of social media?</h2>I remember Shah Rukh (Khan) sir once said that you must work as though you have blinders on. You focus on your work and should not look left or right. That is my mantra in life – to not peep into others’ plates but to enjoy what is on mine. There is no jealousy, just greed to do the best I can for myself.<h2>13. What are you proud of right now?</h2>My outlook towards life. I have clarity about what I don’t want to do in life, and I am proud of that. No one can force me into doing a certain thing, and this is how I have been since childhood.Then there’s self-confidence, which keeps fluctuating, and there is self-belief, which I am confident about and I take pride in. It was in March 2022 that Mrunal Thakur visited Sri Lanka for the first time — a quick getaway from a hectic shoot schedule that included the Telugu-language period love story and her biggest hit, Sita Ramam. So when presented with the opportunity to head back to the Emerald Island for an exclusive Cover photo shoot, exactly a year later, Mrunal could not refuse. And that is how the 30-year-old actor collaborated with Zee Zest to become our April Digital Cover Star serenading the sea.<h2>Owning herself and her fears </h2>A bubbly and effervescent personality, Mrunal does not come with the usual celebrity baggage or hang ups. On the pristine beaches and clear oceans of Sri Lanka, she came with a singular focus to grow as an individual and push her personal boundaries. In our conversations, throughout the cover shoot at Taj Bentota Resort & Spa, Sri Lanka, she revealed that she was hydrophobic, and it took a long time for her to overcome that. “I couldn't go to the pool when I was growing up because of my fear of water, so this shoot is going to be about owning my body and myself. I think the most beautiful thing about being here in Sri Lanka by the beach and the ocean is also to get rid of my fears,” she exclaims.<figure class="image"><img src="https://assets.zeezest.com/images/PROD_L1070687cc%20copy%203_1680597956886.jpg"><figcaption>Mrunal is wearing an orange swimsuit by Hermès and a sequinned neon green top from H&M.</figcaption></figure>She confessed to being self-conscious of her typically Indian, pear-shaped body. A lot of positive affirmation from her team and soul-searching finally led her to embrace her body. A clear sign of it was her donning swimwear for Zee Zest's vacation-themed cover shoot. Her personal style is defined by comfort and subtlety. “I feel extremely comfortable in anything that's not flashy or trying too hard to please. I like playing with colours subtly. I feel androgynous styling is something that defines my personality. And in ethnic wear, “I think you can never go wrong with a sari. I love raiding my mother’s collection," she shares with a wide toothy grin.Inevitably, self-discovery and evolution became the premise for our conversation with Mrunal for this cover story. It bodes well since Mrunal, from her fledgling years in the Indian entertainment industry, has been the embodiment of evolution and growth.<h2>You only live once</h2>It all started with Jab We Met and Kareena Kapoor Khan’s character of Geet that left a deep impact on a 16-year-old Mrunal who grew up in Jalgaon, Maharashtra. In one of the scenes from the movie, when Shahid Kapoor’s character, Aditya Kashyap, requests Geet not to run away from home, she replies: “Mujhe apni bhaison ke saath bandh denge." “When I heard these lines, I knew this is my life, and just like Geet, I did not want to live with the regret of not being able to explore and try different things,” ruminates Mrunal, adding that while she did appear for the common medical entrance tests after her Class 12, she knew this is not where she belonged. Eventually, the small-town Mrunal enrolled in a media and journalism course in KC College Mumbai, proving her conviction to her parents, who were initially shocked by her decision but they did eventually come around.<figure class="image"><img src="https://assets.zeezest.com/images/PROD_Mrunalsrilanka76776%201_1680760015007.jpg"><figcaption>Mrunal is wearing the Titan Edge Ceramic Black Women's Slim Watch. This sleek timepiece features a glossy black ceramic case in a 4.4mm slim design.</figcaption></figure>The ball started rolling for young Mrunal when she bagged her first audition. “That’s when I realised that I'm extremely comfortable in front of the camera,” she said. She was fortunate to be guided on a realistic path when a friend advised her to continuously turn up for auditions. “This egged the competitive side of me—I like taking on challenges and if someone says, ‘you can't do it’, I want to quietly show them how I can. I also realised that as long as I'm in front of the camera, I'm happy,” she said.<h2>10 years and counting</h2>Fortune favours the brave—in Mrunal Thakur’s case—it was also diligence and hard work. After cracking her first TV debut Mujhse Kuchh Kehti...Yeh Khamoshiyaan in 2012, she went on to work for the Ektaa Kapoor soap Kumkum Bhagya and parallelly debuted in Marathi cinema with Vitti Dandu. However, it was Love Sonia, a 2018 film based on human trafficking that moved the proverbial needle in Mrunal’s career graph.It's been a little over 10 years in the industry for her, which she defines as her formative or schooling years. “No acting school would have taught me what I’ve learned while working on different sets. I think I owe my career to television. That's what allowed me to dream even bigger; I knew there was a big universe waiting for me,” she shared. One of the biggest reasons she was able to succeed in her small-screen to big-screen transition was the support she received from the television fraternity; she added that Ektaa Kapoor still helps her out when it comes to selecting the right movies. She also fondly remembers actor Madhu Raja, who played her grandmother in Kumkum Bhagya. “In the time I spent with her, she was the one who told me that if you want something, work for it. Because tomorrow, it shouldn't be like you didn't try. There shouldn't be any regrets or guilt. And as a human, it's very important for you to live a guilt-free life.”<figure class="image"><img src="https://assets.zeezest.com/images/PROD_L1060699_1680764895837.jpg"><figcaption>Contemplative Mrunal in Hermes swimsuit, Studio Moonray black net gown and earrings from H&M.</figcaption></figure>“I think we are transitioning every day, not just work. If I were to compare my current self to five years ago, I am a different person. What worked for me is the vision I had for myself, and the faith I had in myself,” Mrunal continues as our conversation segued into getting stereotyped within a medium. When she started her career, success stories of transitioning from television to mainstream cinema were not so common. But with the advent and prosperity of OTT platforms in the Indian entertainment industry, the lines and distinctions have visibly blurred. “Today, I'm extremely happy when people, especially those who've just started their careers, reach out to me and say, ‘you’re the reason why we think that doors for OTT platforms, films, plays, etc, are open. It's no longer restricted.”<h2>The numbers game</h2>Quiz her about how she deals with box office hits and flops and she retorts, “What defines a hit and a flop movie is very subjective and I don't want to be defined by that.” Speaking about the importance of box office collections and commercial success, she says, “If a film is made in INR 30 crore and has collections of INR 90 crore and there's another film made in INR 100 crore with collections of INR 120 crore — which one is a bigger success?” It is a tough one and a conversation that she will have when she becomes a film producer, which is not yet.<figure class="image"><img src="https://assets.zeezest.com/images/PROD_Mrunalsrilanka76856_1680596390157.jpg"><figcaption>Mrunal frolicking in the clear seas of Sri Lanka wearing a Shivan & Narresh playsuit.</figcaption></figure>The lack of commercial success is an undoubted pinch, Mrunal acknowledges, but with the success of Sita Ramam, she has also witnessed the other extreme of a box office hit. “I’ve never had the audiences watch my films 9, 10, 11 times! They would tag me in their pictures on Twitter right after they’ve seen the film for the nth time,” she added.<figure class="image"><img src="https://assets.zeezest.com/images/PROD_L1070025_1680759494479.jpg"><figcaption>On Mrunal's wrist is the slim Edge Squircle from Titan. And while I know my growth may not be a 360 degree, I know there has been growth. My only aim in life is to be consistent with choosing the different kinds of progressive roles.” She wants to be remembered for the characters she portrays and the story and not the commercial success.<h2>Making of an actor</h2>Every character that Mrunal Thakur takes up for her films, she hopes will help her become a better actor and evolve her craft. She looked back at her choice of taking up Love Sonia — “It was my ‘do or die’ situation, that if I can prove myself with this film, I will get work in the future,” she said.<figure class="image"><img src="https://assets.zeezest.com/images/PROD_L1070434-logo_1680759454254.jpg"><figcaption>Mrunal is wearing the Titan Edge Ceramic watch in green, which is 4.4 mm thin!</figcaption></figure>It was a series of fortunate incidents where her work in Love Sonia directly translated into her next movie Batla House and Sita Ramam. Of the latter, she mentions, “Love Sonia was screened at Melbourne Indian Film Festival and that's where Nagi sir (Nag Ashwin), who's the director of Mahanati, saw it and reached out.” The decision to take up Sita Ramam was a heavy cross to bear for Mrunal — “I did have inhibitions and I was really scared as to whether I should leave Mumbai, my base, my karma bhumi. Having said that, it was a beautiful experience and now I'm learning Telugu.”Of her craft and how she chooses her movies, she says, “It is important to know what I'm doing. I needed to be convinced first to convince the audience and the best way to learn is through someone's experience.” While she did contemplate dabbling with the infamous method acting technique, she also realised the toll it takes on one’s mental health. Eventually, Mrunal has figured out her own process that involves picking up little tips and tricks from her co-actors and has worked best for her.<figure class="table"><table><tbody><tr><td><h3>Mrunal Thakur’s acting role models</h3><ul><li>Mrunal is a huge fan of Manoj Bajpayee after watching Pinjar. “He made me realise that no matter when you get your script, every dialogue needs to be said in a very conversational way not just a dialogue.”</li><li>From Demi Moore (they shared the screen in Love Sonia), “I learned that you need to connect with your eyes.” </li><li>“Paresh Rawal sir (her co-actor in Toofan) would throw a googly at you. I would say my dialogue but he would say the same dialogue in the most unexpected way, leaving you at a loss for words. I would take these small things and add them to my scenes and use them in a way that worked for me.” </li><li>“Hrithik uses fragrances,” Mrunal said. For every character Hrithik Roshan would play, he has a different perfume that would help him get into the nuances of the portrayal. Mrunal and Hrithik worked together in Super 30.</li></ul></td></tr></tbody></table></figure><h2>Mrunal, music and characters</h2>What is Mrunal’s hack when she gets into character, you wonder? “For all the characters I've played, there has been some or the other resemblance from real life and people. Every character is dedicated to one person in my life and now I've also started assigning sun signs because I believe in them, and I think it helps differentiate a person,” she expresses.Apart from assigning character traits from real people, Mrunal heavily relies on music to further build her characters. “Every character has a song that I will listen to throughout the filming process of a project,” she explains. Since film shoots and projects are rarely linear, actors are known to jump from one project to another and back. In such a frenzied schedule, “Music helps me channel my character because it resonates with the journey of the character, which helps me to get into it in no time,” she adds. For Sita Ramam, it was all of Shah Rukh Khan's songs. She remembers her co-actor Dulquer Salmaan's reaction to this during the shoot, “Excuse me, how can you think of Shah Rukh Khan while you’re romancing me?”<figure class="image"><img src="https://assets.zeezest.com/images/PROD_L1070233_1680596529765.jpg"><figcaption>Mrunal's yellow sunglasses are from John Jacobs Eyewear; model Liege.</figcaption></figure><div class="raw-html-embed"><h2>On her new release,Gumraah</h2></div>For her upcoming release, Gumraah, a remake of the 2019 Tamil film, Thadam, Mrunal confesses listening to Indian hip-hop artist, Divine. “His music is full of attitude and sass, which I connected with the character of Inspector Shivani Mathur.” The character intimidated her, Mrunal confesses. “It was nerve-wracking to play a character who has a poker face because my USP is emotions.” She also reveals that her family has been in the police, and the character of Shivani excited her to wear the vardi. “It’s like an homage to my family. My bade kaka (uncle) is an IPS and is serving in the police department and I don't know what his reaction is going to be after watching the film,” she gushes<figure class="image"><img src="https://assets.zeezest.com/images/PROD_L1070413%201%20web_1680765027501.jpg"><figcaption>Mrunal is wearing a swimsuit by Studio Verandah and orange dress by Ituvana.</figcaption></figure>“Shivani is a more mature character — firm and strong, compared to those I have played previously,” she admits. But this is an attempt to add a different shade to her career. Mrunal was visibly excited to work in a crime thriller despite the action sequences being doled out to Aditya Roy Kapoor. “I would say Gumraah is a film only for a smart audience. Not to offend audiences, but by smart I mean the film will make you think and scratch your head,” she clarified. Mrunal is grateful for the opportunities in her career and how they’ve helped her evolve as a human being. She knows that the journey ahead is a long and arduous one, but she is always on the lookout for projects where the ‘many facets of Mrunal Thakur’ can be explored and expressed.
