Kiliyur Falls is one of the most popular yet unexplored waterfalls in Tamil Nadu, located at a distance of about 4 kilometres from Yercaud Bus Stand and around 3 kilometres away from Yercaud Lake, in the Salem district of Tamil Nadu. Perched atop the Servaroyan hill range of the Eastern Ghats, the Kiliyur waterfall comes to life by overflowing from Yercaud Lake and then crashing 300 feet down into Kiliyur Valley.

To reach the Kiliyur Falls location, visitors can drive or hire a cab from Yercaud town. This journey is a mix of drive and trek. From the nearest parking spot, Kiliyur Falls’ location is a steep pathway for about 2 kilometres to its base. This trek can be a little hard, especially for children and the elderly so appropriate footwear and caution are advised. The trek is moderately challenging but rewards you with breathtaking vistas of the Kiliyur waterfall and surrounding landscapes.

The months during and shortly after monsoon between July to December are the best Kiliyur falls timings to visit. It will also be the time when you can see a waterfall full of water and green trees all around your surroundings. The weather is also divine which means it is perfect for trekking and exploring the surroundings. If possible, do not go to Kiliyur waterfall in the height of summer (April to June) since water levels may be low and there will most certainly be high temperatures with humidity.

Yercaud Lake, alias Emerald Lake is a wonderful and tranquil spot which can be found close to Kiliyur Falls location. This lake is surrounded by lush greenery, beautiful hills and boating facilities to enjoy the beauty of the place from the waters. The boat rides are a relaxing way to enjoy the scenic beauty, and there are also several viewpoints around the lake. Well-tended gardens around the lake areas serve as an ideal picnic spot and stroll area.

This is one of the famous viewpoints in Yercaud, also referred to as Pyramid Point. Situated approx 4.5 km away from the town centre, this viewpoint offers panoramic views of Salem city and the surrounding hills. The site derived its name from the four pyramidal structures built by local tribes, adding a unique touch to the site.

The Yercaud Botanical Garden, also known as the National Orchidarium, is a haven for plant lovers and botanists. Spread over an area of 18.4 hectares, within the garden are hundreds of plants representing an array of species - including some listed as rare and endangered species. The orchidarium within the garden is home to over 3000 species of orchids, making it one of the largest in India.

  1. The hike to the base of the Kiliyur Falls includes steep steps and may be slippery at times. You need these comfortable and protective shoes.
  2. As there are no shops near the Kiliyur Falls make sure that you carry water, eateries and other essential things with you.
  3. Give yourself over 3 hours in the park to enjoy a good walk, see Kiliyur waterfall and check out all other nearby attractions without being rushed.
  4. Try to visit the Kiliyur Falls location early in the morning or late in the afternoon to avoid the harsh midday sun, making the trek more pleasant.
